During a recent trip to The Home Depot, I was reminded of the need for the truck segment to be electrified. The ability to haul lumber and other large items make the truck a valuable vehicle format. In Hawaii, trucks are especially popular. The possibility of a trip to the beach or an off-road adventure is enough justification for this to be the vehicle of choice. (Even if off-roading never materializes.)
Fortunately, electric trucks are slowly making their way to production. An online search yielded a number of reviews and articles of companies touting their offerings. Some of these have been announced years ago so some may be on the market soon. The following articles and reviews are what I found. From the looks of it, we will soon have several trucks to choose from!
While several of the trucks are coming from new players in the field, e.g., Tesla, Bollinger, Nikola, and Lordstown, the traditional truck companies are jumping in. Ford and GM have several trucks coming as well!
It’s worth noting that the electrification of pickup and freight vehicles is essential to our mission to decarbonize our transportation sector. The manufacturers’ response to this vehicle format is something to be hopeful about.
I should note that GM’s first electric pickup, the Chevy S10 EV, was built in the 1990s. Some of these are still around.
