I’m almost certain that you’ve already heard this but in case you haven’t…
Tesla announced yesterday the launch of their much-awaited $35,000 Model 3, an electric sedan with a 220-mile range, top speed of 130 mph, 5.6s 0-60 time, and excellent safety rating.
There is a lot more to unpack from yesterday’s announcements:
- Price reductions across all models (including the Model S and X).
- Some firmware upgrades for existing and new customers.
- The closure of physical stores. (Some high-traffic ones will remain as “galleries, showcases and Tesla information centers”.
- Increased investment in service.
The shift to online sales with a generous 7 day or 1000 mile satisfaction guarantee is sure to rattle the auto franchise establishment and allow Tesla to get more people behind electric cars.
Importantly, the downward drift of prices should have a halo effect on other manufacturers (lower prices overall). This will help electric cars be cost-competitive with gas cars even without the current tax credits.
