Bill 120, a Hawaii County EV bill that will allow for enforcement of HRS 291-71 and 291-72 which requires the installation of dedicated EV parking and charging in places of public accommodation. The state law has not been complied with consistently due to the lack of enforcement mechanisms in each county. This bill will amend the County code to allow for enforcement.
The bill was heard by the Hawaii County Council and was supported by all members present. It will now head to the planning commissions – the Windward Planning Commission on May 5 and the Leeward Commission on May 19.
Bill 120 will help enforcement of the state law that calls for EV chargers to be installed on large parking structures, for the stations to be maintained, and for enforcement of rules related to parking in the designated stalls. When passed, it will result in an increase in reliable charging stations around our island. Importantly, it will set the precedent for other counties.
