Hawaii County’s latest charging station is located at the Pahoa Recreation and Community Center (15-2910 Puna Road, Pāhoa, HI 96778). It’s relatively new so it’s not yet visible on Google or Bing. It is located next to the community swimming pool complex.

We visited the new charging station yesterday. This is a quick summary of what you can expect.

  • There are 2 marked EV stalls. However, there is only ONE charging station, with one plug.  A you’ll see in the pictures, the second stall is/was set up for a second station but it has not yet been installed. We will contact the center director to figure out the status of the second station.  (Please feel free to do the same. The contact information is listed below.)
  • The available station is free to use and works fine. We plugged in the Tesla and saw a 6kW, 205V, 30A service.
  • The parking area is clean and there are bathrooms in the community center (subject to operating hours).
  • Pahoa shops and restaurants are about a 10 min (?) walk from the station. Of course, you have the sports facility that you can exercise while you wait. 😉

We’ve added the site to Plugshare.com – if you get the opportunity to use this charger, please share you experience and tips there.

Here are images of the site and the station.

  • Happy to hear there are two EV charging stations in Pahoa. My question is who pays for charge if it is FREE? Helco? The community center? This will mean I can buy an electric car, though I am off grid!

    • Dean – This is a county charger and there is no charge to use it. When we visited the last time, I noticed that there was 1 unit with 1 plug. The unit is at a county property and may be subject to hours of operation of the facility. Hours posted on the County website: Monday-Thursday 12:00 noon – 8:00 pm; Friday 7:45 am – 8:00 pm; Saturday-Sunday 12:00 noon – 8:00 pm

Here’s a comment from one of our members on Plugshare.com about this station:

Just pull in and charge, no card is required and there is no cost for charging. A small grocery store, Long’s Drugs and Bank of Hawaii is just a short walking distance.”

  • Thank you for this public service, I live off-grid and my solar can’t help me right now with charging my car. I very grateful
