A new consortium was recently formed to further electric vehicle adoption across Hawaii – Drive Electric Hawaii!
This group includes several organizations that offer the opportunity to collaborate on several fronts, in order to expand sustainable transportation in our state. The organizations include:
- Blue Planet Foundation
- Hawai‘i State Department of Transportation
- Hawai‘i State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism
- Hawai‘i State Division of Consumer Advocacy
- HELCO
- Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative
- Rocky Mountain Institute
- Ulupono Initiative
This roster offers hope and promise that we’ll be able to enact policies, secure investments, and deliver infrastructure that will increase the number of electric vehicles in Hawaii.
We’re making progress but can do much more. As of November, there were 5009 registered electric vehicles across the state, a 28% increase over the same period in 2015. There were 22, 844 hybrids (8.5% increase over the same period last year). Electric vehicles still make up a small percentage of the over 1M registered vehicles across the state so we’ve got a long journey in front of us. Drive Electric Hawaii will help escalate our journey towards a more sustainable future.
