We previously reached out to you via email to send testimony in opposition of SB409. Thank you to all who responded and acted.

This is an update on the status of the SB409. The measure, one which will introduce an annual surcharge of $50, is expected to pass on April 30. This fee will be included in the annual vehicle registration, starting January 1, 2020. Read the specific language of the bill here.

I’ve sent an email to all of our senators and representatives to encourage them to reconsider. If you’re so inclined, please do the same. The email addresses for both groups are: sens@capitol.hawaii.gov and reps@capitol.hawaii.gov.

Leaders,
A surcharge on non-fossil fuel burning vehicles is something that we must eventually implement. (Eventually.) 
It is too soon to do this – adoption is tiny (less than 1% of our cars are electric) and there are many barriers to it (purchase price, charging station availability). The surcharge that SB409 imposes will serve to slow down our state’s adoption of electric vehicles and goes against our sustainability goals. 
More than ever, we must be take aggressive steps to fight climate change and help our state transition to a renewable future. This bill will serve to delay and dampen our efforts to contribute to the solution.
Please, please do the right thing and stop this bill.
