In this update – Meet-Ups, National Drive Electric Week, Electric Auto Association, EoT Strategy Comment.

Meet-Ups!

Monthly meet-ups are a great way to for BIEVA members to share their experiences and collaborate on matters related to sustainability. Importantly, it is a great opportunity to help would-be EV owners get their questions addressed.

Upcoming Coffee and EV Meet-up – August 4!

Our next August Coffee and EV Meet-up is this coming Saturday (August 4), at the Kilauea Lodge in Volcano Village. This is not only an opportunity for members to meet and share with potential owners, it’s also a chance to bring some business to Volcano Village!

Earlier meet-ups:

June 2 at Kimobean (Shops at Mauna Lani). Despite the mini-marathon that started from the Mauna Lani, we had a decent turnout at the Shops. Drive Electric Hawaii representatives joined us at this event.

July 7 at Papaaloa Country Store and Café. This was our first Hamakua Coast event. Despite the periodic drizzle, many turned out for the event. Our members shared their Tesla Model 3 and the next-gen NISSAN LEAF at this event. Several guests joined specifically to see the Model 3 up close so that they can confirm their order decision or understand what they ordered!

National Drive Electric Week (NDEW)

This annual event runs from September 8-17 and is a nationwide celebration of sustainable transportation. It is intended to raise public awareness of the plug-in vehicles and their many benefits. We will be hosting two events this year as part of this celebration.

  • September 8 in Kamuela at the Waimea Center
  • September 15 in Hilo at The Home Depot

We invite you to take part and share word of these events with your friends, colleagues, and family. If you are planning to join, please register at our NDEW event pages below. After you register, you’ll also have the opportunity to complete a survey for a chance to win a prize from the event organizers.

If you’d like to volunteer at the event, you’ll have the opportunity also indicate this when you register.

Additional details will be shared ahead of these events.

Electric Auto Association

The BIEVA is also a chapter of the Electric Auto Association. This group has been around for a long time – it was established in 1967 and is dedicated to very much the same mission that we have – to increase adoption of sustainable transportation. It provides groups like ours with support in the form of educational material, event insurance, and fund-raising support. It is also a national organizer of National Drive Electric Week, along with PlugInAmerica and Sierra Club.

Please consider joining the Electric Auto Association. Membership costs as low as $35/year. When you join, you’ll be able to specify the chapter of your choice (choose Hawaii!). If you’re interested, visit the electricauto.org membership page.

PUC Comment for HECO’s Electrification of Transportation (EoT) Strategic Roadmap

Several BIEVA members responded to the PUC request (PUC Order 35527) for comment on the EoT Strategic Roadmap offered by HECO. The roadmap outlines several initiatives, each with short to long-term action items. If you are interested, you can find public comments at the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission website. Search for docket number 2016-0168.

On the page that is presented, click the “Documents” tab. This will display a list of documents. Click the document icon to view the document details.

Those that labeled “Public Comment; Docket No. 2016-0168” represent feedback from individuals and organizations.
