Check out the latest information on electric vehicles in Hawaii at the State Energy Office website.
Some interesting tidbits from the site:
- ‘Fuel’ cost comparision (the annual cost to charge a LEAF is roughly half the cost to fuel a similar gas vehicle like the Versa).
- The Big Island lists four Level 3 charging stations. (The 4th is likely the upcoming HELCO station in Waimea.)
- “Free parking is provided in state and county government lots, facilities, and at parking meters.” (You get free parking at the airports too!)
- “Hawaii ranks second in the nation behind California in the number of EVs registered per thousand people.”
- “The first car to arrive in Hawaii was Electric.” (in 1899!!!)
NOTE: The EV stats in the report were from August 2016. The counts as of November 2016:
Registered Electric Cars
NOV 2015 | NOV 2016 | % Change
Oahu | 2957 | 3875 | 31% |
Maui | 655 | 744 | 14% |
Hawaii | 172 | 228 | 33% |
Kauai | 135 | 162 | 20% |
State | 3919 | 5009 | 28% |
We’ve passed the 5000 mark statewide. This is still a sliver of the over 1M vehicles in the state but we’re seeing good increases across the state.
Hawaii is kicking gas!
